3a. Communicating About Purpose and Content

Grammar Unit

Learning proper grammar skills in the elementary grades is crucial for success. Learning about grammar rules in and out of context with help you successfully write cohesive and grammatically correct writing and speech.
Below is a lesson plan about frequently confused words where we discussed the importance of using the right form of certain words or it can change the meaning of a sentence/phrase.

Identifying Authors Purpose
ELA Lesson

Identifying the purpose of a text is important to know what the author is trying to convey in their story. Having students discuss and ask questions about the content of the text will help them grow as learners and in identifying the purpose of texts.
Below is a lesson plan from my 4th grade student teaching placement where we used the Gradual Release Model to find evidence in the passage that supports the purpose type (to entertain, to persuade, to inform).

13 Colonies Classwide
PowerPoint Project

When learning about the 13 Colonies in Social Studies, instead of teaching all the students the 13 Colonies and Colonial American History in a traditional way, I had the students teach their classmates about certain colonies. Each pair/group of students was assigned a colony to research and become an "expert" on. Students then presented their colony to the class to teach their peers about their colony. Multisyllabic Routines "Identifying
Vowel Teams" Formative Assessment

Using formative assessment is very important to ensure your students are on the right track to skill mastery. Whether this be an exit ticket, quick check-in, or circulating while students are learning, formative assessment is so important. Attached is a "quick check" I did with my students after our multisyllabic routines reviewing identifying vowel teams. This served as an exit ticket into ELA Small Group for me to check and see if we could move onto the next step of pronouncing vowel teams. The List of words was displayed on the board for the students to sort.

As a teacher you are very likely to have English Language Learners (ELLs) in your classroom environment. The toolkit attached highlights professional resources, teaching tips, real English Language Development (ELD) observations, and additional artifacts that could help teachings in effectively educating their ELLs in the genera education classroom.
